Finishing works: grouting between tiles

Posted by: 25.11.2017

When planning facing works in the kitchen or bathroom, most of them stop at the tile. This is a wise decision not only from the practical side. Tiles made of tiles, ceramics, marble or porcelain tiles are ideally suited to the above-mentioned types of premises. They look rich and long serve. However, most builders think that the most important thing in such works is the quality of the tile itself. And this is true, but only on 80%.

The fact is that in addition to laying tiles you need to wipe the seams between it. Only then the product (worktop apron, or wall in the bathroom) will have a finished look. If the tile joints are not filled or poorly worn, then you should prepare for new repairs. When water penetrates under the tile, it breaks the connection with the wall (or floor) that the glue provides. What should be considered when doing the finishing work?

Grouting materials

It seems that this is the easiest question. Just go to the store and ask for grouting. But when they come to the sales department, the majority of inexperienced workers face difficulty. It turns out that grouting for joints is different! It differs not only in color, but also in composition.

For example, the standard material for tile joints has a classic composition: cement, sand and additional water repellent additives. Most often, this grout has several shades of gray. Some use the remains of tile adhesive as such material. Another type of grout - epoxy based. It has a greater resistance to water, and is ideal for rooms with high humidity.

When buying a material, it is worth considering the quality of the laid tile. Glossy tile is very gentle. Therefore, it is not advisable to use cement-sand grout. Or reduce the sand content in it to a minimum. Otherwise, scratches will be visible on the tile. Epoxy grout badly in contact with water. Therefore, it is more difficult to dilute to the desired consistency.

Required Tools

The tool is a little easier. To perform the work you will need gloves (better if it will be rough rubber) - to protect your hands from the influence of the constituent elements of the grout. When working with cement materials, a respirator is also required. Few people pay attention to this, but the kneecaps for such work are just like air! Who needs repair if it hurts their health?

For the grout itself need a rubber spatula. Some cost ordinary metal tools. However, with its help, the seams between the tiles are not filled so well. In addition, such a tool increases the risk of mechanical damage to the gloss of the tile. The maximum for which it is needed - to remove the dried glue from the seams. But a hard brush with plastic bristles (for cleaning carpets) will be able to cope with this task. After doing the troweling, you will need a damp cloth or sponge and a bucket of water.

Principle of performance

At the very beginning, as the logic prompts, all means of protection are put on. Then the surface is prepared.

  1. At this point, remove all adhesive residue from the seams. If tile laying was done carefully, this process will be easy, and a brush can handle it. If you use a metal spatula, then they need to work carefully so as not to leave streaks on the tile.
  2. The next stage is the kneading of the grout. After the required consistency has been achieved, the mixture is applied with a rubber spatula. The tool must be held at an angle of approximately 30 degrees relative to the surface. You can navigate by cutting off the edge of the spatula. The mixture is applied with gentle movements in one direction, and then in the other. It is very important that the grout completely fills the entire cavity, and not just the top. To achieve this effect, you need to press the mixture into the seam.
  3. After treating the area in 1-2 м2, the rest of the mixture should be cleaned with a wet rag or sponge. If this is not done, then the mortar will dry out and it will be more difficult to remove it from the surface of the tile without causing harm to it.
  4. To make the seams look neat, they need to be rubbed with a rag wrapped around a finger. Movement should be along the entire seam, firm and confident. If a mixture of air bubbles appears in the mixture, it should immediately be sealed with a solution, causing it with a finger. After waiting 10 minutes, wipe the seam.

In no case can accelerate the process of drying the mixture, for example, heaters forcing hot air. In this case, the solution will dry out and crack dramatically. The final stage of the work - cleaning the surface with detergents. But this should be done only after complete drying of the seams!
